What is XBRL ?

XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is an open standard developed by an international Consortium of more than 500 organisations.

The idea was first put forward in 1998 by an accountant in a small CPA firm in Washington in the United States. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) incubated the technology with the assistance of large accounting firms and technology vendors, and turned it into an international standard for use by accountants, regulators and companies around the world.

XBRL allows regulators or very large firms to construct a dictionary of terms, called a taxonomy. These taxonomies can be used in the construction of instance documents, which are financial reports that reflect the performance of an organisation or entity at a specific point in time.
